About Us

Beacon Academy was formerly Shelthorpe Community School and converted to an academy in December 2012.  The original buildings date back to 1933 with various extensions over the years.  We currently have nursery places for children from 2 years old and most of these children move through to main school when they are 5.  There is also a Specialist Provision for children with Moderate Learning Difficulties, these places are allocated by the Local Authority. In the main school there are two classes per year group and class sizes are on average about 25. All classes in KS1 have a full time Teaching Assistant to support the children in their learning.

Values and Ethos

At Beacon we focus on developing the whole child, not just academically.  We have developed some behaviours for learning that we believe will enable children to develop the skills they need to ensure they are able to face whatever their future holds with confidence.  These behaviours are; teamwork, independence, creativity, resilience, reflecting and curiosity.
