posted 2 Feb 2017, 04:11 by Judith Malcolm

The academy was successful in winning £10,000 from Tesco through the 'Bags for Life' scheme.  This money has been used to develop the grassed area on the Key Stage 1 and 2 playground.  Please see below the pictures of our fantastic finished area which is being used very effectively by our children for quieter games and activities.  Our intention is that the children will be able to use the area for lessons when the weather improves.

Lottery Funding - New Play Area for Beacon Nursery

posted 10 Feb 2016, 06:32 by Judith Malcolm

Beacon Nursery has just completed putting in a new play area with safe surfacing for the children.  This was only possible due to Lottery funding received last Summer to enhance the grounds that our children use every day.

Louise Bussell, the newly appointed Headteacher said “The children are already loving the new play area and surfacing which is eye-catching and has brightened up the outdoor facilities.  The play equipment has many exciting areas that encourage the children to develop their physical and exploration skills.”

Beacon Nursery welcomes all pre-school children, from the age of 2 years and upwards in the community, to attend our nursery provision where they will learn and grow with the help of our excellent practitioners and facilities.

The Big Lottery Fund supports the aspirations of people who want to make life better for their communities across the UK. We are responsible for giving out 40% of the money raised by the National Lottery for good causes and invest over £650 million a year in projects big and small in health, education, environment and charitable purposes.

BEACON ACADEMY AWARDED FOR THEIR HEALTHY FOOD ACHIEVEMENTS

posted 10 Feb 2016, 06:25 by Judith Malcolm   [ updated 10 Feb 2016, 06:26 ]

Beacon Academy has been awarded the Food for Life Bronze award for its healthy and climate-friendly food culture.

The school is working with Food for Life to transform the school’s food culture and that of its local community, by connecting the children with climate-friendly and healthy food.

As part of the Bronze award scheme, Beacon Academy serves seasonal school meals, 75% of which are freshly prepared by our very own experienced school cook, Steph Ion. The school also gives every pupil the opportunity to visit a farm, cook and participate in food growing activities during his or her time at school, and pupils and parents are involved in making improvements to the school’s menu and dining experience.

Judith Malcolm, the School Business Manager, said “the academy has worked very hard to ensure that the children all have a nutritional and healthy school lunch that follows the School Food Plan as recommended by the Department for Education.  The children and parents have been involved in suggesting ideas for the menu and once a year we survey both to see what children like and what they don’t.”

Independent research, summarised in a new report ‘Good food for all’ reveals the success of five years of Food for Life. The evidence from three independent research studies focuses in particular on four main areas of impact: children’s health, tackling inequalities, improving education, and local enterprise and sustainability.
